Château de Castries - (34)
Castries, with its hilltop location in the middle of the Languedoc plain, has always been a privileged place for observation and surveillance. The presence of a castle for many centuries gave this territory a seigniorial role, and the masters of the place quickly contributed to the administrative, political, religious and military history of the region and of France. In particular, the “de La Croix” family, who became “de La Croix de Castries” after settling in Castries, brought honors to their fiefdom, which passed successively from barony to marquisate to duchy.
For over four centuries, the “de La Croix de Castries” family contributed to the greatness of France. Whether military, on land or at sea, or ecclesiastical, they were fervent royalists, while respecting the nation's choices after the French Revolution. The turbulent history of Château de Castries has not prevented the family from remaining very attached to their fiefdom, and doing everything in their power to keep it under their control. The history of the family and that of the château are therefore closely intertwined, until 2013, when the municipality of Castries became the owner of the entire estate (château, park, aqueduct, outbuildings, furniture).
After a major restoration of the roofs and facades, work to restore the interiors was launched in July 2018 for three years.
