Collégiale Saint-Martin - Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (13)
The Collegiale Saint-Martin is located to the west of the old town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Il was built between 1821 and 1825 in the neo-classical style to plans by Michel-robert Penchaud, the departmental architect. The new church, built of Saint-Rémy stone (Saint-Rémy-de-Provence molasse), stands on the site of the former 11th and 14th century church, which collapsed in 1818, leaving only the bell tower and the Jean de Renaud chapel.
The listed building is architecturally homogeneous and authentic, as the interiors have not undergone a major restortion campaign since the church was completed 200 years ago.
The current restoration campaign covers the entire interior. Work began in Mai 2024 with the restoration of the last two bays of the nave and the transept crossing.
The cofferd cupola was laser cleaned by Girard company. The beauty of the volume was restored by levelling, repointing and applying a patina. The central oculus is currently being restored by Vitraux Imbert. SMBR is in charge of cleaning, consolidating, restoring the 19th century stencil decoration of the transept crossing, in bright colors enhanced with gold and silver.
