Eglise Saint-Nizier

Restoration of the south aisle and adjoining chapels

Recognisable by the slender spires of its two bell towers overlooking the roofs of th Presqu'ïle, the church of Saint-Nizier remains, through its transformations and restorations, the monument and emblem of the people of Lyon. Rebuilt at the end of the Middle-Ages, it respresents the culmination of flamboyant Gothic architecture, then the novelty of Renaissance art and finally the art of 19th century decoration.

The restoration work consisted in remedying the consequences of structural damage to the vaults and cleaning the facing of the walls, piers and vaults. The work of restoring the color of the whitewash has enabled the light in the rooms to be restored, and the new lighting has helped to enhance it, as has the reinstatement of the conservation of the painted decorations  : amorial kestones, 9th century faux-apparatus imitating ashlar and mural paintings of angels. In addition, stained glass windows, railings, altars, ex-votos, satues, floors ans paintings have all been restored to the spendor they deserve as witnesses to 19th century art and spirituality
